Last week, I found out that Murder By Death was performing in Denver the weekend after the Utah League of Cities and Towns Annual Convention. I would love to see MBD perform live. I had to miss them last April because of the Utah Municipal Clerks Association Conference. I did some research and I could fly from SLC to Denver, on Delta, for less than $110 r-t. I will be in Salt Lake the Friday of the 11th, and I could fly out from SLC easily.

Today, I find out that Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros are playing two shows close to Denver, the two nights before the MBD concert. Damn. Sharpe is playing in Lyons, CO on the 11th and at the Monolith Festival the next day. I just read on Slowtrain's blog that they sell tickets for Monolith. I'd take it as a sign that I need to attend, but $ is still an issue.

Megz van is not firing on all cylinders, literally, and our dishwasher will not drain. Rats and blast.

Well, in a more perfect world, I would be able to attend these shows. I have thought about selling myself, or my possesions to try and go to Denver.

On the brighter side, I can enjoy music from Murder By Death, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, along with new (new to me) favorites from The Flying Lizards, Blue Giant, Howlin' Rain and St. Vincent, at any time I want.

Tomorrow starts the first day of the Utah League of Cities and Towns Annual Convention (they're 100th!). Wish me luck waking up to get to the office by six a.m.

I will see Black Rebel Motorcycle Club after the convention, Thursday night, so I have that going for me. Feel free to drop by the Salt Lake Sheraton City Centre and pick up a free pen and/or flashlight.

I managed to finish Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows recently. 5 stars. Not knowing what to read next, I might reread the Hungry City Chronicles by Philip Reeve.

I wanted to post a thank you to all the family for providing for a fun weekend away from home. I had a fun time and I know Oliver loved it. "Cow, cow, cow, cow, cow!" I forgot to bring my standard camping Unisom tablet. Oh well, maybe next time.

The highlight of the trip, for me, was walking up the hill toward the Temple. It had been some time since I was on the grounds of a Temple. (When was the last weddin'?" I was glad to experience the peace that site can provide from the world. I had my expired Temple recommend renewed yesterday and I'm excited to return back to that peace.

I managed to camp without receiving a broken bone or a major scratch, so that is an improvement from camping with scouts. The scouts don't scratch, but playing Steal the Flag in bushes can mess up your legs.

Ollie still has a red mark on his calf from his pajamas that he wore to the pageant. I think he likes it, it is a good conversation starter for him.

All in all, I had a fun time. The food was good, it wasn't unbearably hot, I wasn't at work for two extra days and I had a chance to hang out with family. Thanks again.

Emphasis on gut and eardrums

I have a spare minute, so I'm going to write about my lunchtime eating habits and the great concert I attended Wednesday night.

Lunch bo bunch: Because I'm odd and lazy, I have been making peanut butter and nutella sandwiches in hotdog buns. I was buying bread for meat sandwiches for lunch for a while, but I'm so germophobic that I was washing my hands much more than I felt comfortable. Loaves of bread wouldn't last more than a week and keeping deli meat fresh worried me too, so I settled for an 18 oz. bottle of Jif Creamy and brought a reduced-to-oil Nutella from home. I purchased a 16- count package of Wonder hot dog buns because I'll always have a place in my heart for wonder after our fifth grade(?) class visited the factory and we each received our own mini loaf o' bread. I've been making my own Bollycao. (Click on Bollycoas on the bottom right) Yeppers. I mean, yummers. Fee fi mo munch.

In theory, I'm saving money.

I TiVo'd the recent season of Celebrity Fit Club. I get inspired to make changes - to eat right and start exercising more, and then I go to sleep.

Avoiding mirrors and looking at the floor has helped avoid body issue drama.

I went to see Black Rebel Motorcycle Club on Wednesday night. I'm calling it the best rock show that I've ever attended. Special thanks and shout-outs go to the drunk guy that would point at Peter Hayes while they both sang the songs. Drunk guy was on the balcony pumping his pointy finger at Peter accentuating every word of the lyrics as if to illustrate, "You're not the only one that knows the words, silly goose." I saw this because I was up on the balcony too. I had to go back to my car because I forgot my I.d. and you can't go upstairs without being of age and sporting your I.d.

In the Venue has hosted all of the concerts that I've flown solo on. I've seen The Walkmen w/ Mazarin, The Futureheads w/ Tapes 'N Tapes, TV on the Radio, and now BRMC. This was the first time I ventured upstairs to try and find a spot out of the blast range of the Venue's semi-crappy sound system. Upstairs was better, but I wasn't ready for the flood lights that BRMC brought with them that were all pointed at the balcony. My eyes adjusted and I didn't see spots after the first two songs.

The band was amazing. I fell in love with their music six years ago with their first album. It seemed to me that that album would translate directly to a live stage performance. I wasn't wrong. The latest album has a much glossier production and I had to hear some songs live to really appreciate them. The finer production takes the music out of my imagined context of the band. Gibberish.

Peter Hayes hung out on the balcony, three feet away from me and watched Eastern Conference Champions perform. I never dare say anything to musicians I idolize. He looked just like this- The presure I was taking off of my ears going upstairs was equal to the bad exposure I opened myself up to via second-hand smoke. I'll sit closer to the open air area of the balcony next Tuesday. Last February I purchased tickets to see BRMC and Animal Collective. AC should be an interesting show. Let me know if you want to go too. Times up. Me no blogging gooder.

This is my haiku ode, or "haiuoe", about my Kenalog shot for my allergies. I look forward to the "you know this has the chance of causing an unpleasant butt dimple, eh?" That is a horrible paraphrase-ation of "the Kenalog pep talk". Both times I've received the shot I've had the possible effects of the shot explained to me. Last year, doc called it a "divot". This year he called it a "dimple". The paper that I signed this year called it, fat atrophy. Since no one in the universe is concerned about my bikini line, even myself, I'm not concerned if I happen to get the gluteus maximus indentation. Ten days has passed and all I've seen where I received the injection is a Bugs Bunny band-aid.

When I saw TV on the Radio, I made my ritualistic stop at Mechanized in Salt Lake. Once again I thought I really wanted one of those vinyl figures that you decorate yourself. I talked myself out of it, but I finally came up with what I could do, if I had one. This is what the plain figure looks like. I Photoshopped the image of the $200 model. Booger. Luckily there is a $30 version. I'm pretty happy with how this started to look.

When you buy a figure, it will come with four different props, though you don't know what you'll end up with. That intrigues me too. I've seen a cool Arabian sword and pencil prop.

Something I Overheard

I dread going to Wal-Mart. It ranks up (down) there with long post office and bank lines. I went there last week to buy bottled water, a loaf of bread and string. The one redeeming part of this trip there was a random thing an older lady said to somebody, as I was passing by. She said, "Once a redneck, always a redneck" and then laughed a Wal-Mart brand laugh. Use your imagination.

My favorite Wal-Mart story:
May 6, 2003 This happened at the same store. I had to leave early for work one day, to drive south somewhere. It was a Tuesday and I was really hoping to purchase an album that I knew was available that day. I had to leave early, so I knew the only store that was open that might have it was tha big WM. I went to the entertainment section and scanned the shelves and didn't find the CD. Asking the young clerk working in that section didn't help anything either. In a huff, I went to look for something to snack on for the drive. I was by the diaper department when, over the intercom, the young clerk asks, "Will the customer that was looking for Anthrax please return to the entertainment counter." A giant smile crossed my face. I wondered if he realized what he just said. I wanted to know if anyone else caught what had been said. Classic.

I went up there North and saw TV on the Radio perform live. Their dead performances are not that great, and certainly not worth blogging about, but last night was amazing. It set the bar pretty high for the rest of the concerts I hope to see this year. The encore (1 of 1) was the best of any show I'd seen. I just wanted to post a thanks to my wife for a fun birthday/anniversary weekend. Our weekend wouldn't have been possible without help from our families. Grandma W gave us the night stay at Hines Mansion (it isn't THAT big) and offered to watch Ollie. Our movie was provided by my sister's Christmas present of a Cinemark gift card.

Hey. I'm only trying to solidify the fact that I don't blog much.

Feb. 7, 2004 was the day that I rolled my car with my precious wife and her sister as passengers. I won't give a report on whe I've learned in the last three years, because my actions don't show that I've learned anything. At least that is how I feel.

Our television has been moved to our bedroom closet. If you are reading this, Ollie, then you are old enough or smart enough to know that you should pick up a good book and not a TV remote. I am working on that plot point myself. I'm torn whether to get a smaller, more portable TV, or just get a few DVD box sets when they are available and read or draw at night whilst the fam is asleep.

Shows I'll miss, now that the TV is retired: Heroes, House, The Office, The (White) Rapper Show, the first half-hour of Smallville (The Office trumps Clark and Co.), Talk Soup and especially Psyche, which had just started up again. Most of what I've just listed, if they were all made into DVD box sets might total a television. I guess I'd rather have a house.

I called a loan officer of our bank and asked a few questions. Getting into our (new) house hinges on the usual of selling our current home and jumping through all of the paperwork hoops. Dealing with a realator and all that doesn't appeal to me in the least, but it is apparent that it is getting time to move on.

Valentine's Day is approaching fast. I asked Megz for The Best of The Durutti Column, and I hope it arrives via the mail before the 14th. Megz needs a new watch, but that isn't very romantic, is it? She'll get flowers for sure, but I don't know what else.

Our ward will have a talent show on the 17th and I still don't have a drawering fer it. I started reading Twilight (see here) and I found a part in the book that I'd like to illustrate. Place your money down now whether or not I'll get to it. If I do get to it, expect something green. I will try and write more here during the year. Oh, and I like Twilight very much.

Four Months On

I just wanted to post some happy thoughts. Yesterday I wore my Chester tee (from Sifl & Olly). Oliver saw the shirt and turned around and pointed at my Muppets book on the shelf behind him. That's my boy. We looked at Muppets for a few minutes and Oliver did the sign for dog when he saw Rawlf and patted his head to sign for the hat that the Swedish Chef wore. For a thirteen-month-old, I'm pretty impressed.

Lil' D's independent spirit is shining through now too. Watch out.

Halloween is approaching. I don't know how to celibrate it. Mrs. D and I watched part of MST3K's The Teenage Strangler. "Aw, Jimmy! It's all my fault! I know you didn't steal that bike!" Oh, the wonder of it all.

I was asked to be "shadowed" at work by Jeremiah. He's 12, and is convinced that he wants to be a Graphic Designer. So, Friday he watched me work for a while and then we started "Dragon Death." This was all his idea. We used some found images from the net and made a very short Flash film. If you'd like to see it, go to Dragon Death.

Posting that link comes with a lot of anxiety. I'm sure he'll show this off with great pride to his teacher, parents and friends, but what will they think of the dolt that collaborated with Jeremiah? I appologize, and I feel I need to, for the content of the file, but the exercise was to illustrate what it would take to, make the film. Sorry, I'm typing this as if my back was to a corner.

Hi, campers,

I finally published my first blog that I drafted last August. TLD is now almost four months old and he rocks. I've been enjoying doodling at doodleBug online, but I think that the little straight lines have taken a serious toll on my right wrist. Time will tell. Here are two of my favorite doodles that I did recently.

The top sketch is Siouxsie Sioux. The other is a rendition of a drawing that I saw over ten years ago and vaguely remember. The small details are provided by small straight lines that require clicking both the right and left mouse buttons, at the same time, at the start and end points of the line. A labor of love and I guess that a sore wrist is "suffering for my artwork" even if it is for an audience of five.

At Last.fm, my profile total shows that Lisa Germano has topped my listening list for the second week in a row. Uhm, still not tired of 'er. I'm giving my wrists a break now. More to follow. Happy New Year and live while you're livin'.

Lisa Germano topped my list for the second week in a row. I'd like to wax poetic somewhere about now, but maybe I'll run through a short history of "How I Got Hooked on LG." The fist song that I'd heard from her, that I knew of, was "Sexy Little Girl Princess" from the After the Fair: 21st Century Women. It was from that compilation that I first got hooked on Heather Duby. That CD had Kristin Hersh and Dot Allison, so I wondered whom they had partnered with those liked artist.

Okay, some time passes, blahididily and a co-worker, much wiser in "good music" than I had meekness to admit, tried to introduce me again to Lisa Germano. He copied a few songs for me and I listened. And relistened. And listened some more, but I never follow-ed up about her. It wasn't until I used "Sexy Little Girl Princess" on a Killed Bill soundtrack I compiled, that I really sought out more of her work. I'm glad I did.

Fast forward, blahdidangdihdang and I've really enjoyed listening to her. I'm working on a compilation called "Wispish." I recently read Neil Gaiman's Stardust and I want to make a fairy/pixie/wispish kind of ethereal goodness disc. Any suggestions?

Our 2004 Taxes should be sent off today. That is a relief and a pain. I can vaguely remember telling myself I wouldn't get into a rut like this again. Well... fine, taxes will be paid for and I can start trying to save for my 2005 quarterly estimates (in August). oops. Okay, so taxes = no fun.

Typing about "no fun", the Stooges The Stooges album is being rereleased tomorrow.

I'm most excited about the rerelease of Siouxsie and the Banshees albums. The Scream will be released in October. I can't wait.

The Littlest Derhay, or "TLD" should arrive in about four weeks, or less. The prospects of childbirth and a new addition to our family is, uhm, unsettling. More on that later. In fact, more ramblings later, that's enough for starters.
